South Suburban College celebrates Women’s History Month

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (March 8, 2018) – South Suburban College kicked off Women’s History Month with a free one-woman stage act about Harriet Tubman on Thursday, March 1, 2018, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. Veteran actress, vocalist, director, and playwright Cynthia Maddox performed for a crowd that included elementary, high school, and college students as well as community members.

Maddox’s one-woman stage act highlighted the trials and tribulations of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist, humanitarian, and, during the American Civil War, Union spy. Tubman is best known as a “conductor” for the Underground Railroad. This “railroad” had numerous stops in Illinois.

Chicago Women’s Conference

Observance of Women’s History Month continues on Friday, March 16, with the Chicago Women’s Conference. The conference fee covers attendance as well as breakfast, lunch, workshops, and vendors. Non-Traditional Career Panel

On Wednesday, March 21, South Suburban College will host a Non-Traditional Career Panel from 12:00–2:00pm in the Performing Arts Center. For example, non-traditional roles for men might include nurse, administrative assistant, or elementary teacher. Non-traditional fields for women might include Computer Science, Truck Driving, Welding, Building Construction, Highway Construction, and the trades. The panel will feature individuals in these roles, and specific career programs will be available to answer questions and prepare students to enter these career paths.

Interested high schools, community groups, and other members of the public are invited to attend the panel discussion. Because of a Perkins Grant covering much of the cost, the event is free to the public.
