The Lansing Journal journeys: Illiana Creative Writing class

-

by Melanie Jongsma

DYER, Ind. (September 22, 2018) – In mid-June, as the 2018 school-year schedules were being finalized, Illiana teacher Emily Hillegonds invited me to come speak to her Creative Writing class. Each year, she sprinkles a variety of professional writers throughout the semester, giving her students an opportunity to interview them and learn what “real-life” writing is like. I have been a guest twice before, and I enjoy interacting with the students. Their questions help me see my work from a fresh perspective, and putting my answers into words helps me crystallize my thoughts.

This year we spent quite a bit of time talking about news, and decision-making, and community, and the future of print media, and whether there should be a Lansing Journal news app. It was a helpful discussion.

Before dismissal, the class agreed to let me take a photo for publication:

And one student—Senior Briana Besser, near the center, above—had the marketing savvy to grab a copy of The Lansing Journal and display it prominently, thus qualifying the shot for our “Journal journeys” feature. Thank you, Briana!

Keep those Journals journeying!

We love to see Lansing residents (and other people, too) posing with The Lansing Journal—around town or across the border. Send us your photos of The Lansing Journal in unique places, and we’ll publish as many as we can!
