SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (October 6, 2018) – On Tuesday, October 9, the South Holland Fire Department will sponsor an annual Parade of Lights in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, which is October 7–13, 2018.
SHFD will be joined by other suburban Fire Departments in a silent tribute to fallen firefighters and citizens who have suffered a loss in fire emergencies. Fire fighting apparatus—including fire engines, fire aerial ladder trucks, squad cars, and ambulances—will form a lights-only parade that will wind through the streets of the villages of South Holland, Thornton, and Homewood.
The Parade of Lights has been attended by hundreds of residents in past years. It is a quiet, reverent way that fire departments can pay respect to fire fighters and civilians who have lost their lives in fires. Residents have commented on how impressive and beautiful this parade is, with emergency lights from the fire apparatus lighting up the night.
Last year approximately 40 pieces of fire fighting equipment participated in the Parade of Lights. The number has increased each year since the inception of the parade in 1996.
The Parade of Lights will begin with a public service at Thorn Creek Reformed Church (1875 E 170th Street) at 7:00pm, and the parade will leave from there at 7:30pm, head west on 170th Street, turn north on Cottage Grove Avenue, turn east on 166th Street, turn north on Dobson Avenue, turn west on 165th Street, turn north on Cottage Grove Avenue, turn west on 162nd Street (Route 6), turn south on South Park Avenue, continue onto Eleanor Street in Thornton, turn south on Williams Street, turn west on Margaret Street, continue through to Ridge Road in Homewood, and turn north on Dixie Highway. The parade will end at the Homewood Fire Station (17950 Dixie Highway), in honor of Homewood Firefighter Brian Carey, who made the supreme sacrifice while fighting a structure fire in Homewood.
