LANSING, Ill. (November 12, 2018) – A photo snapped by Michael E. Bergin, a leader with Lansing’s Boy Scout Troop 276, captures the dramatic plume of smoke and fire that accompanied the blast as Army Veteran Mayor Patty Eidam discharged the 1943 M5 Anti-Tank 3″ Gun that was returned to the American Legion on Sunday, November 11, Veterans Day. The firing of the gun was part of the traditional Veterans Day ceremony held at the American Legion.
The M5 had been refurbished by the Veterans Garage, a nonprofit organization that researches and restores not only historic military artillery, but also vehicles and other relics.
In preparation for the return of the M5, Millers Ready Mix donated concrete for a new, larger concrete pad on which to display the gun along with a sign describing its significance.
After the ceremony, the American Legion hosted a thank-you luncheon for the many people who were generously involved in the refurbishment of the gun and the preparation of the new display area.
Local veterans and others throughout the Lansing community who are interested in the history represented by the U.S. Army 1943 M5 Anti-Tank 3″ Gun are invited to make donations to help offset the expense of its restoration. Checks can be made payable to Lansing American Legion Post #697 and mailed to 18255 Grant Street in Lansing, Illinois.
