Legion Riders present checks to Lansing Police and Fire Departments

by Melanie Jongsma

LANSING, Ill. (November 30, 2019) – The Mayor’s Report at the November 20 Village Board meeting focused on a special presentation from the American Legion Riders. Nick Grigutis, President of the Legion Riders, expressed appreciation for the availability and willingness of the Lansing Police and Fire Departments to help honor Lansing veterans.

“We’re here today to present a certificate of appreciation and $300 checks to the Police and Fire Departments,” Grigutis said to the Board. “A lot of times they come escort us when we have our rides and…veterans come in from Honor Flights. When people come home on leave, or if they get out of the service, we’ll escort them home. We also do sad things like funerals or flag lines for veterans.” At each of those occasions, police cars and fire trucks are present to join the escort, using lights and sirens to not only clear traffic but also announce the return of a veteran.

After presenting the checks, Grigutis said, “At the second Honor Flight this year, we showed up, and there was the Mayor and the Trustees, and the townspeople started comin’ out. Some woman who had opened up a balloon shop—she brought balloons, and we had a balloon release. So the town’s really gettin’ involved, and that’s good to see.”

The Legion Riders’ motto is to “help the veteran that can’t help himself, and to do some good in the community through the fundamentals of motorcycling.”

The Riders meet at Lansing’s American Legion on 18255 Grant Street. For more information about the variety of services they provide, visit the Chapter 697 Facebook page.
