Theater for Young Audiences announces 2018–19 season

MUNSTER, Ind. (September 1, 2018) – Theatre at the Center’s 2018-19 Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) season of live theater for school groups and families includes a continuation of classic stories as they leap “from the page to the stage” to both educate and entertain audiences.

The season kicks off with the classic tale Sleeping Beauty, October 4-8, produced by Chicago Kids Company. Attending groups can enter a coloring contest for a chance to win tickets to the upcoming production of The Holiday Shop. The show is recommended for pre-school through 5th grade.

The Holiday Shop (December 5–14) is an original musical about a young child who finds a magic snow globe that can bring to life toys from around the world, all sharing rich traditions. Produced by Charles Misovye and Associates, attending groups can enter a “create your own Christmas card” contest for a chance to win a Family-4 Pass to Zao Island. The show is recommended for pre-school through 5th grade.

The new year launches with Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad—January 22-26 in 2019. Produced by Virginia Rep on Tour, this stirring drama is a tribute to the great American who freed herself and hundreds of slaves with courage to change the world. A new public performance has been added at 11:00am on Saturday, January 26. Groups who attend a performance can enter an essay contest for a chance to win a $100, $50, or $25 Youth Savings Account from People’s Bank in Munster. The show is recommended for grades 4 through 12.

The season concludes with Little Red Riding Hood (April 8-14, 2019)—the classic adventures of the colorful little heroine, Grandma, and a hungry wolf. The show is produced by Charles Misovye and Associates, and attending groups can enter a coloring contest for a chance to win tickets to Wolf Park. The end of the TYA season is always celebrated with The Prince and Princess Party on Saturday, April 13, from 10:00am–noon. Children will have an opportunity to dress up as their favorite Prince and Princess. Guests can enjoy activities, food, and fun, including a buffet lunch of chicken tenders, fries, a juice box, and a chocolate sundae for $12 per person. Tickets for that Saturday’s performance of Little Red Riding Hood are available for an additional cost.

School performances

TYA School performances are weekdays at 9:30am and 11:15am, with additional performances of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad January 25 and 26 at 1:00pm. Public performances are Saturdays at 10:00am and noon, with additional performances of Little Red Riding Hood on Sunday, April 14 at 10:00am and noon.

Pricing information

All TYA public performance prices are $8 per student and $10 for adults. School group prices are $6.50 per student and $8.00 per adult.Groups of 100 or more students are only $5.50 per student and $8.00 per adult. One complimentary ticket is issued for every 25 paid students. Everyone attending a school performance must have a reservation.

Guests can enjoy lunch at 12:15pm in the dining venue on select dates for Sleeping Beauty and The Holiday Shop. The menu consists of an all-beef hot dog, potato chips, fruit rollups, cookies, and an orange drink for an additional $6 per person. Reservations are required.
