HARVEY, Ill. (October 15, 2018) – District 205 estimates that as many as 1,600 students will be chanting “Bring the Peace” at a Peace March kick-off ceremony this Thursday at Thornwood High School. The keynote speaker at the ceremony will be National Advocate on Gun Control Mei-Ling Ho-Shing, a 17-year-old survivor of Florida’s Parkland School Shooting. This will be Mei-Ling’s third visit at Thornwood High School.

Me-Ling says her concerns are “heartfelt in urban America with police brutality and the senseless killings of young people involved in gangs and violence.”

The Burrows twins, Demetrius and DeMorris, who are on the cars.com and Burger King commercials, will also speak on Thursday. The twins will speak against gang violence and police brutality. They will encourage students to “never give up on their education or their dreams.”

Thursday’s event is a prelude to the third annual March for Peace, which will take place Saturday, October 20, 10:00am, at Ascension St. Susanna Catholic Church, 15234 Myrtle Avenue in Harvey, Illinois. Rev. Dr. Ozzie E. Smith Jr., Senior Pastor of Covenant United Church of Christ, will be the keynote speaker at the march. Rev. Dr. Smith says, “Let’s end the violence and ‘Bring The Peace’ in God’s name.”

The March For Peace will involve hundreds of students, families, educators, church members, and supporters. The public is invited to participate. There will be a celebration after the march at Ascension St. Susanna Catholic Church.

A voter’s registration drive will also take place at both the Thursday kick-off and the Saturday march.
