Public Works completes two of five locations
by Melanie Jongsma
LANSING, Ill. (November 14, 2018) – Lansing Public Works was busy at the railroad crossings at Ridge Road and Thornton-Lansing Road today. The required flexible delineators were installed at both locations. This is the next step in making these areas Quiet Zones, which means train horns will not sound at those crossings.
Flexible delineators are designed to prevent vehicles from going around the gate when it is down. Adding that safety measure is required before CSX Rail will agree to discontinue train horns in an area, because the horns are also intended as a safety measure.
Work will continue at three other railroad crossings on Friday, necessitating the closing of the following roads for extended periods of time during the day:
- Burnham Avenue near 187th Street
- 186th Street near Ridgewood Avenue
- Torrence Avenue at 183rd Street
On both days, the project is expected to last until approximately 3:30pm. The Village asks that drivers plan alternative routes on Friday as no traffic will be able to pass over the tracks while the work is being completed.
