Frigid temps force cancellation of Forest Preserves’ MLK Day of Service event

information provided by the Forest Preserves of Cook County

COOK COUNTY, Ill. (January 21, 2019) – More than 100 volunteers—including youth from Hansberry College Prep High School, Lost Boyz mentorship program, Universidad Popular mentorship program, and Johnson College Prep High School—had planned to spend Martin Luther King, Jr. Day participating in restoration work at Dan Ryan Woods in Chicago. But today’s below-freezing temperatures and the dangerously low wind chills predicted led to a decision to cancel the event.

The three-hour event was scheduled to begin at noon today. The plan was for participants to help staff remove invasive plants while learning about efforts being made to maintain healthy habitats. Family-friendly wintertime activity stations were also part of the plans, including hot drinks, a brush pile burn, guided hikes, animal tracking, crafts, and more.

For more information about the cancellation, or about upcoming events in Cook County Forest Preserves, contact Stacina Stagner, Communications Manager:
