WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 25, 2019) — Governor JB Pritzker was appointed to the Council of Governors, a 10-member bipartisan panel that advises the federal government on matters of national security, homeland security, disaster response, and the National Guard.
“As the largest state in the Midwest, and as a state with a strong National Guard, Illinois plays a critical role in keeping our country safe, and we will be an important voice on the Council of Governors,” said Gov. Pritzker. “My administration has appointed highly skilled leaders in several public safety roles, and I look forward to working with governors across the country to prepare for and respond to the threats and challenges we face.”
Established in 2008, the Council of Governors fosters state and federal coordination and advises on the benefits and compensation for National Guard members. The council works closely with the secretaries of defense and homeland security, presidential homeland security and counterterrorism advisors, the commander of U.S. Northern Command, the commandant of the Coast Guard, and the chief of the National Guard Bureau.
Gov. Pritzker attended his first meeting this weekend with director of homeland security and IEMA General Alica Tate-Nadeau and Adjutant General Richard Neely. Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Hawaii Gov. David Ige serve as the council’s co-chairs.
