GLENWOOD, Ill. (March 29, 2019) – Janet Hadnott, Glenwood Academy junior high science teacher, was one of three educators in Illinois to win a $250 classroom grant as part of the Illinois Energy Workforce Consortium’s (IEWC) Careers in Energy Week contest. Winners were determined in a random drawing of all entrants.
Mrs. Hadnott applied for the grant to acquire funds for lab activities for her science students. “The grant funds will be used to enrich the science curriculum with lab assignments that will further enhance student learning,” she said.
Nicor Gas partnered with the IEWC and other Illinois-based energy groups to increase public awareness of careers in the energy industry and emphasize the important role energy companies have in supporting the local economy. Former Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed an official proclamation to declare Careers in Energy Week, October 15-19, 2018, in the State of Illinois. The announcement highlighted efforts to create a strong and growing energy workforce and to encourage Illinoisans of all ages to consider a career in the energy industry.
Educational resources and the grant application were available for Careers in Energy week. Mrs. Hadnott integrated the online materials into her lessons and asked students to view videos and read information about salary and education requirements for work in the energy sector. “Students then discussed what they learned with each other,” Mrs. Hadnott said. “They also talked about what they would need to do to secure a job in energy.”
Science education is important because children need to know about the world around them and how they relate to it, according to Mrs. Hadnott. “Science also teaches students how to think critically, problem solve, and communicate with others,” she said.
