Marian Catholic Class of 2019 includes several firsts

Also, two Lansing residents rank in Top 11 scholars—including one as Co-Valedictorian

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 30, 2019) – Marian Catholic High School celebrated 263 graduating seniors at the Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 20. The Class of 2019 will go on to attend 93 different schools in 22 different states and D.C. This class was also rewarded $23 million in scholarships as of May 30, 2019.

The academic Top 10 was increased to a Top 11 this year, due to the closeness of the students’ grade point averages. And for the first time in Marian Catholic history, two students were named co-valedictorians:

  • Co-Valedictorians: Noor Baig (Olympia Fields), Harvard University; and Christina Javorka (Lansing), Ohio State University
  • Casey Woods (Beecher), Indiana University
  • Ethan Roberts (Lansing), Loyola University Chicago
  • Maritza Spott (Schererville, Ind.), Auburn University
  • Kyle Rusin (Schererville, Ind.), Indiana University
  • Calyn Brumley (Flossmoor), Georgetown University
  • Blake Recupido (Matteson), Saint Louis University
  • Danille Gaczkowski (Chicago), University at Illinois Chicago
  • Emily Kaderabek (Orland Park), Boston College
  • Heidi Schuffert (Beecher), University of Illinois at Springfield

The graduating class of 2019 also included six students from Amerigo Education, an international student program that partnered with the school in 2016. Those six students are the first from Amerigo to graduate from Marian Catholic.

Additionally, 32 students were named Illinois State Scholars from the graduating class. Named by the Illinois State Assistance Commission (ISAC), a student is recognized as a state scholar based on a combination of the student’s class rank and ACT or SAT score, or if they score above 30 on the ACT.
