LANSING, Ill. (February 14, 2020) – The boys basketball teams at Heritage and Memorial Jr. High Schools have each achieved postseason success this year, with Heritage advancing to the state tournament to play at 11:30am on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Heritage Nationals advance to state

Heritage defeated Chicago Frances Xavier Warde 61-49 in Wednesday’s sectional game and will take on Teutopolis Jr. High in an attempt to move on to the 8th Grade Class 3-A state semifinals. Saturday’s game at 11:30am takes place at Tolono Unity Jr. High School in Tolono IL, located about 10 miles south of Champaign. If Heritage wins that game, the team will play again at 5pm, where it’s possible it will be matched up against South Holland’s McKinley Jr. High. If Heritage wins the semifinal game, it will advance to the state championship game on Feb. 20 at 7:30pm in the same location.

The sectional-champion Nationals lost just three of their 21 games so far this year, and are separated from the state championship game by only two wins.

“I teach all these boys. I’m so proud of them,” said Beverly Schweitzer, English teacher at Heritage.

Heritage Middle School is located at 19250 Burnham Ave. in Lansing.

Memorial Mustangs are regional champs

Memorial Jr. High beat Coolidge Middle School in a regional game on Feb. 4 to advance to the school’s first ever sectional contest against Prairie-Hills Jr. High on Feb. 12. Memorial lost that game, falling one win short of making it to the 8th Grade Class 4-A state tournament. Prairie-Hills won the 7th Grade state championship last season.

The regional-champion Mustangs notched an 18-4 season record.

Memorial Jr. High School is located at 2721 Ridge Rd. in Lansing.
