LANSING, Ill. (April 1, 2020) – “If you’d be interested in running something positive during these difficult times,” read a March 29 email from Superintendent Nathan Schilling to The Lansing Journal, “take a look at the post below on District 158’s social media feed.”
In an effort to ensure that families can stay connected and accomplish e-learning while the state-wide school closure is in effect, District 158 donated 50 refurbished laptop computers. The computers were given out at all schools—and givers and receivers were careful to practice safe social distancing in the process. “Students that received them were very appreciative,” said Dr. Schilling.
The District 158 Board of Education had already approved the donation back in January, and applications were sent to families at that time.
The donated computers were distributed just days before the Illinois State Board of Education determined that all school days for the remainder of the closure will be considered Remote Learning Days or Remote Learning Planning Days—that is, days that do not need to be made up at the end of the school year.
“It is our hope that this [donation] will help students at all of our schools to remain educationally engaged and have access to technology during the school closure,” wrote Superintendent Schilling in a letter to families.
