LANSING, Ill. (May 1, 2020) – In a week that included rain showers at least part of most days—and cooler than average temperatures—Lansing residents somewhat gladly stayed indoors, in spite of a growing sense of quarantine-induced cabin fever. The biggest change came at the end of the week, May 1, when Governor Pritzker’s “mask mandate” officially went into effect, making face coverings a requirement for residents out in public.

Lansing homes shared encouraging messages to passersby: “Stay Home, Save Lives! Thank you healthcare and essential workers.” (Photo: Melanie Jongsma)
“Everything will be OK! We got this!” shouted one sign, while the other offered three axioms: “Faith not fear;” “This too shall pass;” and “We will rise up.”

Some local businesses, such as Waters Edge (18418 Wentworth, Lansing), have been requiring masks throughout the quarantine, even before May 1, in an effort to prevent workers from getting sick. (Photo: Melanie Jongsma)

“Big George” Vincent, owner of Unlimited Service Auto (3210 Ridge Road, Lansing), believes that Lansing will get through these unprecedented times. “This is a good town,” he said. 1. Actively Waiting
Linger’s air, breath’s divide; hovers without will.
Silent waits, a swell reserved; groaning mutters still.
Watchful souls, a presence felt; times of manners fill.
Glory sight, a miracle rests; answers patient thrill.
Soften’s heart, surrender’s voice; questions none eternal.
