LANSING, Ill. (June 23, 2020) – It is with great sadness that the Village of Lansing announces the sudden passing of Trustee Michael Manno on Sunday, June 21st, at the age of 68.

Trustee Manno resided in Lansing for almost 60 years. He was married to his wife Kathleen for 45 years; together they had three daughters—Dana (Craig) Parkhill, Renee Manno, and Nikki Manno—and one granddaughter, Harper Parkhill.

After working for the Lansing Public Works Department at the beginning of his career, Mike joined the Lansing Police Department in 1978 and served there until his appointment as a Village Trustee in April of 2013. Mike’s involvement with the police department’s Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) programs is where he may be best known for his positive interaction with countless children in Lansing schools.

Mike’s vast resumé of community service includes serving on District 171’s school board as well as the Police and Fire safety team. His countless volunteer efforts also include serving as president of the TF South Booster Club and the Lansing Lions Football Organization, as a coach in the Lansing Girls’ Softball Program, and as the chairman of the Marian Catholic fundraising committee. Additionally, he served for two years on the Board of Directors for the Lansing Association for Community Events (L.A.C.E.) organization, was a member of the Lansing Volunteer Recognition Committee, and in 2018 became the first male to win the prestigious Lansing Athena Award for his community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.

Lansing Mayor Patty Eidam knew Mike personally and professionally for over 40 years. “Mike was my mentor when I became Lansing’s first female police officer 41 years ago. We helped each other through paramedic school and so many other accomplishments and difficult times. Through the years he has been my friend, supporter, and confidant. I will miss him deeply.”

Friends may visit with Mike’s family on Monday, June 29, 2020, at St. John Catholic Church, 301 South Cottage Grove Ave. in Glenwood, Illinois, from 1:00 to 9:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at 11:00am at the church, with Father Bill McFarlane officiating. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendees for all services are respectfully asked to wear masks and follow the social distancing requirement of six feet.

Michael Manno dedicated his life to helping others, especially the children of Lansing. He leaves a legacy of kindness, good citizenship, respect, and volunteerism like no other. He loved Lansing with his heart and soul and worked every day to make it a better place to live, work, and play.

We can all honor Mike by living by the examples he set for all of us.

  1. I think he should be dubbed Mr. Lansing for the countless hours he has given to the community. Plus we should honor him with a parade and a Mike Manno day. Condolences to his family as he will be sorely missed.
