CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 26, 2020) – The Bloom Township Board of Trustees, at its regular board meeting on June 23, 2020, unanimously approved Resolution 2020-12, which declared that the date of June 19 shall annually be honored as an official Bloom Township holiday.

June 19, which is known as “Juneteenth,” celebrates the final reading and imposition of the mandates contained in the Emancipation Proclamation in the State of Texas by the Union Army. Juneteenth is honored as the final official act of ending slavery in the United States.

Bloom Township Supervisor T.J. Somer stated, “The Township is proud to honor what is one of the most important events in America’s history. While the Declaration of Independence pronounced our demands for freedom and independence, the Emancipation Proclamation and the war to enforce its mandates was our country’s paramount moral edict that declared the end to slavery, pronounced what we aspired to as a country, and declared that the fundamental freedom we so cherish must apply to everyone. It is a day that should be honored by everyone.”

Lansing residents south of 186th street are included in Bloom Township. The Bloom Township Center is located at 425 South Halsted in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
