Community support made 138 stories possible in September

by Melanie Jongsma, Managing Editor

LANSING, Ill. (October 1, 2020) – This community newspaper published 138 articles in September, including 7 Arts and Entertainment stories, 17 posts about Business and Work, a couple of editorials, a couple of Local Voices pieces, 17 obituaries, 15 stories about our schools and school districts, 4 notices about property taxes, and various pieces of Community information. Our largest category of posts was, as is usual now, Health and Safety—44 entries—largely because of the daily updates we provided about COVID-19 cases, deaths, testing, and more.

About half of this month’s posts were news releases provided by other sources—state agencies, funeral homes, various local organizations. We publish them as a service to those organizations, but also as a service to our readers. With so much going on in our townships, county, region, and state, it’s important to stay informed.

The other half of this month’s news was gathered, researched, written, and published by our own team of local journalists. Sometimes they suggest story ideas they want to cover. Other times Josh or I will assign a story to them. Each reporter invests hours into each article—attending meetings, making phone calls, taking notes, taking photographs, wording and re-wording until they are confident the information is accurate and clear. The stipend we pay them does not nearly equal the value we receive in return.

Community support is what makes this community newspaper possible. Each month we receive contributions from people who understand the importance of having a local, balanced, reliable source of information. This newspaper is free because we want everyone to have access to community news. We are able to keep it free because of these people.

Thank you, September supporters
