Melvin Porter, age 94, of Lansing, IL, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. Porter, nee Triezenberg. Loving father of Dennis (Maria) Porter, Ronald (Sharon) Porter, and Diane (Mark) Emanuelson. Devoted grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his brothers Floyd (late Arlene) Porter and Jim (late Carol) Porter; and also by his parents Jacob J. and Josephine Porter. Melvin was a United States Navy Veteran and served on the USS Atlanta in WWII. He was a longtime member of First Church, PCA in Lansing, IL, serving as deacon and elder multiple times throughout the years and also on multiple boards of various ministries. Melvin was a previous owner of Porter’s Cleaners. He was also a member of Kiwanis and Indiana Drycleaners Association. Throughout the years Melvin enjoyed baseball, bowling, golfing, fishing, skiing, traveling, annual Minnesota vacations, people, and most of all his family and church family. Melvin was a wonderful, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Visitation Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane Dyer, IN, with Rev. Ben Kappers officiating. Interment Skyline Memorial Park – Monee, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Bible League International (3801 Eagle Nest Dr, Crete, IL 60417) are greatly appreciated.
