LANSING, Ill. (December 18, 2020) – TF South High School’s Fernando Lopez is headed to Yale University next fall on a full scholarship through the QuestBridge National College Match program.
Questrbridge is a national program that connects high-achieving high school seniors with full four-year scholarships to the nation’s top colleges. According to the Questbridge website, of the over 18,500 applicants, QuestBridge selected 6,885 finalists to be considered for the QuestBridge National College Match 2020 Scholarship, and 42 college partners then selected 1,464 finalists, who are recognized as Match Scholarship Recipients. Lopez was selected by Yale University, which he listed as his top choice in the application process. The Match Scholarship covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, and travel expenses.
Jeff Majewski, Lopez’s guidance counselor at TF South, started working with Lopez on the scholarship last February. As the summer progressed, Lopez and Majewski worked together to continue submitting materials for further scholarship consideration. Majewski learned on October 21st that Lopez had made the final round for the scholarship, at which time Lopez was asked to rank his top five choices of schools, with Yale being his number one choice. “I’m so incredibly proud of Fernando’s hard work and incredible achievements.” Majewski said, “He has a bright future and will represent his school and community well at Yale University.”
Lopez works at Mancino’s in Lansing and has been involved in Scholastic Bowl, Mathletes, and Boys Volleyball at TF South. He has a 4.33 grade point average and scored a 1460 on his SAT exam. He is tentatively planning to major in biology at Yale and is considering a career in the medical field. TF South Principal Jacob Gourley said, “We are so thrilled for Fernando and for his family. He has truly earned this opportunity and we are so excited to follow his success over the years ahead.”
