Obituary: Marie A. Kelly (nee Gagliano)

December 14, 1933 – December 29, 2020

information provided by Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home

The world lost a beloved mother, Marie A. Kelly (Gagliano), on December 29, 2020. Marie battled lung cancer for several years, but it never stopped her from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marie died at Munster Community Hospital surrounded by her children, Mary, John, and Lynn. Marie was born in Chicago, IL on December 14, 1933. She grew up on the “East Side” with her loving parents, James and Mary, and brothers James (Jimmy) and Michael (Mick). Marie loved to dance and met the love of her life, John (Jack), at a dance club. They married in 1957 and soon moved to Lansing, IL where she resided the remainder of her life.

Marie worked at Sears for over 15 years in the credit central and automotive departments, mostly as a customer service representative. She was a devout Catholic, parishioner of Jesus Shepard of Souls (Our Lady of Knock). She was an active member of their Rosary Club and Women’s Guild providing clothing to needy mothers and babies with her many friends (especially Marie Hill and Betty Moran). She loved the Chicago Cubs through thick and thin and they could always be heard in the background on her television.

She enjoyed reading and playing cards; however, she loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends. She cherished her 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and appreciated every moment with them even if it was video calling with them in 2020. Marie was a great host and often prepared her renowned homemade ravioli. She was well known for her hugs and would be the first person to greet you when you entered the room with one. She and her hugs will be missed.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack); son, Michael (Mike); parents, James and Mary; and brother, Jimmy. She is survived by her three loving children, Mary (John) Sufie, John (Lisa) Kelly, and Lynn (Stephen) Thate; 10 grandchildren, Bryan (Patricia), Krista, Nicole, Elyse, Erik, Sean, Jacquelyn, Erin, Amanda and Shannon; great-grandchildren, Jayden and Gianna; brother, Mick (Arlene); and sister-in-law, Nancy.

Friends and family are invited to say a final goodbye to Marie at St. John Church, 311 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Glenwood, IL on January 2nd from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial for Marie at 11:00. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL. Schroeder-Lauer-Funeral Home has been entrusted with Marie’s care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Marie’s name to the Shriner’s Children Hospital or to your local food pantry.
