South Shore Arts announces spring art classes

Information provided by South Shore Arts

MUNSTER, Ind. (February 15, 2021) – As the snow continues to fall and cold temperatures linger, South Shore Arts is looking forward to the spring season ahead and is offering a variety of art classes, both in-studio and online. Classes for children, youth, and adults will begin on March 29, 2021, and registration is now open on the South Shore Arts website, or by calling the Director of Education, Summer Scharringhausen, at 219-836-1839 ext. 103.

Art classes in person and remotely

This spring, in-studio art classes at South Shore Arts continue to be conducted with many COVID safety precautions including reduced class sizes, more spread-out studio spaces, mask requirements, extra sanitizing and cleaning supplies, and other social distancing measures. For students wishing to participate in classes remotely from the comfort of their own home or studio, online classes are available as well. The online classes are conducted via Zoom, with live interaction between instructors and students, and will allow students to work with a variety of artistic mediums.

The South Shore Arts ceramics studio continues to be a popular draw for all ages. With a dedicated mid-fire ceramics facility, students have access to the Skutt 1027 kiln, Cone Art 2827D kiln, Brent SRC slab rollers, Brent Model C potter’s wheels, stoneware clay and a variety of glazes. Adults will find many studio options, including introductory classes, intermediate and advanced classes, and open studio use for repeat adult students. Youth classes for ages 5 through 16 provide instruction and experience with hand-building techniques, pottery wheel, and glazing. A new addition to the ceramics class list is Intro to Ceramics for Bigs & Littles, in which children and adults have the opportunity to create ceramic artwork together.

Classes and programs for everyone

Classes in two-dimensional mediums such as drawing and painting, and digital mediums such as photo editing and illustration, are also offered this spring at South Shore Arts, both in-studio and online for a variety of ages. South Shore Arts instructors are highly qualified teaching artists. Many of the instructors are professional artists working in the field, bringing their knowledge and talents to create a vibrant learning experience like no other.

In addition to spring classes, South Shore Arts offers a free program for high school artists looking for opportunities to network and gain experience in the arts world. The Teen Arts Board is in its second year and continues to grow. The group is a youth-led network of high school students interested in the arts, consisting of 10-20 members working together to build this new program. Each school year, the Teen Arts Board members participate in visioning sessions, to decide whether they will publish a zine, curate gallery exhibitions, participate in arts-related field experience, connect with professional artists, paint a mural or do something completely different that the group envisions together. Applications are available on the South Shore Arts website or by contacting the Director of Education, Summer Scharringhausen.

South Shore Arts is located at 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, IN.
