IL 394 and Glenwood Dyer Road among projects in southern Cook County this summer

CHICAGO, Ill. (June 28, 2021) – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that multiple improvement projects in southern Cook County are underway or starting soon and extending into 2022. The six projects represent a total investment of $27 million for the region, with $14 million coming from the Rebuild Illinois capital program.

“With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, we are restoring and transforming Illinois’s aging infrastructure,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Rebuild Illinois is not only about investing in infrastructure but about investing in people and communities as well. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges and provide jobs in southern Cook County and across the entire state.”

Glenwood Dyer Road from Stony Island Avenue to Torrence Avenue (Illinois 83)

  • The improvement project includes widening the existent pavement to accommodate a two-way left-turn lane, installing ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and traffic signal modernization at Stony Island Avenue. One lane in each direction will be maintained throughout construction. The project is scheduled to begin this summer and completed next fall.

Illinois 394 from north of 186th Street to south of Joe Orr Road

  • Ongoing resurfacing project with ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Daily lane closures are needed to complete the project, which began earlier this spring and is anticipated to be completed this summer.

Steger Road over Interstate 57

  • Deck replacement project on the bridge carrying Steger Road over I-57. A full bridge closure will be required. Traffic will be detoured via Ridgeland Avenue, Sauk Trail and Cicero Avenue (Illinois 50). The project is scheduled to begin this summer and completed this fall.

Dixie Highway from Chicago Road (Illinois 1) to 183rd Street

  • Ongoing resurfacing project with ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Daily lane closures are needed to complete the project, which began earlier this spring and is anticipated to be completed in late fall.

Harlem Avenue from 111th Street to U.S. 6

  • Resurfacing project with new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Daily lane closures will be needed to complete the project, which is scheduled to begin this spring and completed this fall

Illinois 83/127th Street at Tinley Creek

  • Bridge replacement and intersection improvement project with dedicated right turns, resurfacing and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Staged construction with daily lane closures. Traffic will be maintained in one direction. Temporary traffic signals, construction signage and lane closures will facilitate existing traffic. Left-turn detours will be provided. The project is scheduled to begin this fall and completed in fall 2022.

“These projects represent a significant investment in southern Cook County and are a big step forward in our work to improve safety, mobility and create economic opportunity for years to come,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We’re asking drivers to be patient, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone.”

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing $33.2 billion into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs, and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history but also the first one that touches all modes of Illinois transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
