Finding new ways to minister

compiled by Melanie Jongsma

LANSING, Ill. (March 20, 2020) – Honoring the CDC’s request to limit social gatherings, Lansing churches are exploring a variety of ways to continue to preach the Gospel, offer encouragement, and be a caring, calm resource. The list below is a round-up of Lansing churches and a summary of the services they are currently offering.

(To add your church, email [email protected].)

“Our love for Jesus compels us to do what is best for our community and neighbors,” reads a letter from Pastor Michael Eberly. “Our church leadership is continuing to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 virus situation closely. We are making this choice not to only minimize our own risk, but to protect others from risk. We are acting from a posture of love, not fear.”

Grace

Pastor Leroy Childress writes, “To the Lansing Community and beyond. We pray during this time of unfamiliar living that you are finding peace and comfort in remembering our God sits on the throne and is very much in control. In response to COVID-19, we will have service in the form of ‘House Church.’ This is more than a streaming/online service, even though you will be able to do that as well on Sunday. We are inviting you to join us online or by phone. We have kept this option open as we recognize not everyone has technology that allows them to connect online so we have opted to make both avenues available for our members and guests. Go to the website above for more information and instructions or click the Zoom link to connect to our service at 10:00am on Sunday morning. If you don’t have a computer, you may also join by phone:

  • Dial 312-626-6799
  • When prompted enter the Meeting ID Code: 787 391 820#

“We look forward to worshiping with you at 10am on Sunday.”

Living Word

A message from Living Word: “During this unprecedented time our church community is holding fast to the promise of Jesus that ‘where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.’ We believe that Jesus is present and working to make all things new in the midst of this global crisis, and we are seeking to participate in that work by hosting weekly live-stream worship services for the encouragement of God’s people, caring for one another and our neighbors however possible, and praying for God’s mercy to make the difference. In all of this we want to proclaim that Jesus is Lord, his kingdom has come, and all are invited to live under his loving rule.”

New Hope

  • 3642 Lake Street
  • 708-474-7717
  • Website: www.anewhopeministry.org
  • Service time: 10:00am Sundays

“As the world is humbled and we human beings are brought up against our limits,” says Pastor Dan Roels, “we all need to look to the things that don’t change and cannot be threatened: God’s love in Christ and His Word through the Holy Spirit. As we’re encouraged in James 4:8: ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you.'”

St. Ann

“Fr. Mark does want to do something at the local level, but we haven’t yet hammered out how that will happen technically,” explained Jennifer Gray, Communication Specialist for the parish. “So for the meantime, below are the Catholic Mass resources we are pointing to for our parishioners.”

St. John’s Ev. Lutheran

“Sunday Worship and Wednesday Lenten Services have been cancelled until March 31,” says the church leadership. “We will at that time determine what will happen in April.”

A variety of Lutheran resources are available for home worship:

  • Lutheran Hour Ministries (www.lhm.org/lent) is offering daily Lenten Devotions.
  • Lutheran Ministries Media, INC (now known as “Worship Anew”) offers Sunday sermons: Sunday at 8:00am on Comcast 184 or WPWR Channel 50; DirectTV at 10:30am TCT channel 377.

Trinity Lutheran

“Pastor’s intention is to upload videos of services, sermons, hymns, and/or messages,” says Trinity’s Office Manager Megan Roe. “We realize all of our members do not have Facebook, and YouTube is a great option.”

Oak Glen United Reformed
