Information provided by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra
MUNSTER, Ind. (August 28, 2023) – The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and Music Director/Conductor Kirk Muspratt have invited the public to come out and enjoy the group’s 82nd season.
Concerts will be performed at the Auditorium at Living Hope Church, 9000 Taft Street, on the Merrillville/Crown Point border, plus there will be a special performance of Holiday Pops! performed at Valparaiso High School.
Season performances
- Halloween: The 2023-24 season kicks off with the return of the fan favorite Halloween concert, with two performances October 26 & 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Symphony last performed their Halloween pops 10 years ago at the Star Plaza Theatre. The concert will feature light and spooky classical pieces as well as fun music from movies and television. Members of the Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform several pieces with the orchestra as well. Musicians, and especially Maestro, will be dressed in their finest Halloween costumes, and the audience can join in the fun. Prizes will be awarded each evening for best the costume.
- Holiday Pops: The beloved Holiday Pops, a South Shore Holiday Tradition, will be on December 7 and 8, at Living Hope Church, and 9 at Valparaiso High School — and will feature the Symphony Chorus, Jonathan Brown, vocalist, and the Just for Fun Ukulele Strummers.
- Carmina Murana: In the spring, Carmen & Carmina will feature Chicago Symphony assistant concertmaster David Taylor performing the virtuoso Carmen Fantasy, and guest soloists and our own Symphony Chorus will perform the beloved choral masterwork Carmina Burana on March 22.
- Rome and Juliet: Finally, the season will conclude with Romeo and Juliet which will include both Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev’s interpretations of Shakespeare’s famed romantic tragedy on May 10.
Other concerts
Additionally, the Symphony has introduced a series of Sunday afternoon concerts in Munster:
- Sing-Along Messiah with the Symphony Chorus on November 11 at 3 p.m. at St. Thomas More Church
- Percussion Ensemble on February 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Theatre at the Center
- Flute Ensemble on April 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Theatre at the Center.
Tickets range from $40 – $75 for the season concerts, and $30 general admission for the Sunday afternoon concerts. Students are $10 for all concerts. Subscriptions are available for the four season concerts at a 20% discount off regular ticket prices, or patrons can purchase all seven concerts and receive a 25% discount. Subscriptions are available until October 27.
Group sales are available at a discount beginning at 10 people.
Symphony Gala
This season will also see the return of the Symphony Gala, featuring the CoverGirls Violin Show, a colorful, high-energy, musical revue of the greatest pop and rock hits all performed on their signature purple electric violins. Join the Symphony for cocktails, dinner, entertainment and silent auction, October 6 at 6 p.m.. Tickets are $165 per person, and tables of 10 start at $1650.

I thought Star Plaza was torn down ! Last time I went by there it was an open field !
Herby, this news from NISO says the Halloween concert was last performed at the Star Plaza 10 years ago. This year’s Halloween concert will be at Living Hope Church in Merrillville.
